Kurbaan

Kurbaan is not Fanna, Fanaa was very romantic. Kurbaan is notNewyork(Thankfully), the actors are not wooden here. But kurbaan is not Khuda ke liye either (sadly). But Kurbaan, despite its loopholes, is an engaging watch for the mere fact that despite knowing pretty much everything, the audience waits for the next twist. Yes, you know all the way that Saif is a terrorist, but you still feel curious about his next move, even though you might guess it beforehand.

It’s a KJo production and he is turning out very well as a producer. Rensil desilva, the director, who is also credited with co-writing rang de basanti has made a good watchable first film, quite thrilling too. Saifeena are good together, nicely played their characters. Vivek oberoi is okay(except that weird american accent which he tries too hard). Om puri is good too. But one thing about Kirron kher, she has played the role of a punjabi mom so often that the minute she appears on screen you suspect she would go the maa-da-laadla way..lol. Thankfully she doesnt! And yes, there is not much about Islam too, unlike the very debatable and thought provoking Khuda ke liye, which remains the best template for movies based on Islamic terrorism. At certain points, kurban is very pro-fundamentalist, justifying the logic of terror. But somehow it becomes repetitive and the climax falters.

The music by salim-sulaiman gels well with the movie. Shukraan allah is good, but you can’t help but notice the mar jaawan influence. Also, its beats and guitar are similar to tujh main rab dikhta hai from rab ne bana di jodi(Both are salim sulaiman’s earlier works) But it’s a good romantic number. But the most haunting one is Ali maula, very pulsating. Kurban hua is wasted in the end credits. However, more than the music it’s the background score that leaves a mark big time. The movie is shot well. No one shoots foreign location better than Yashraj/KJo. And yes this does have a feel of a Hollywood movie, the suburbs and all.

Now that super hyped love making scene. Naah, nothing that burnt the screen but done in a quite clean way.

The overall opinion on Kurbaan has been quite negative. Many of the people in the audience said it has over simplified the terror thing and all. But despite its flaws, despite knowing most of the twists and turns in the story, it keeps you on your seat. And It worked for me.:)
